Family Support and Your Business Life: Why It Matters

By Norm Murnieks

Networking takes evenings, energy and focus. The people at home are often the reason you can keep going. Treating their support as part of your professional life makes both stronger.

Why it matters

Behind most consistent networkers is someone who covers dinner, listens to the plans or simply accepts the late evening. That support is real, and it deserves recognition and planning, not only thanks after the fact.

A network is built over years, and years need balance. If events cost you the time and attention of the people closest to you, the habit will not last.

Put it into practice

Tell the people close to you what you are working toward, agree which evenings are for events and set aside protected time for them.

  1. Explain what you are working toward and why it matters. People support goals they understand.
  2. Agree on a rhythm together: how many evenings a month feel fair to everyone involved.
  3. Share the calendar early, so nobody learns about an event at the last minute.
  4. Set a time to be home and keep it. Predictability is a gift to the people waiting.
  5. Protect family time: put the phone away and give your full attention.
  6. Say thank you specifically and often, and find a way to return the time.

What to say

Thank you for covering tonight so I could go. How can I return the time this weekend?

  • “Thank you for covering tonight so I could go. How can I return the time this weekend?”
  • “I have two events next month. Which dates work best for you?”
  • “Here's what I'm hoping to get from this. I'd like to hear what feels like too much.”

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Treating support at home as a given. Appreciation keeps it strong.
  • Letting events creep into every evening. Agree on limits and review them.
  • Being physically home but mentally on your phone. Presence matters as much as time.

Quick answers

The short version

It varies. Many people find one or two evenings a month sustainable. The right number is the one you have agreed with the people it affects.

Plan ahead, communicate clearly and be fully present when you are home. Guilt eases when the arrangement is fair and agreed.
